This artwork is an attempt to showcase the traditions of Bengal and to create an aura of the festive mood that is palpable inside every bengali's heart during the auspicious day of the Bengali New Year or Poila Baishakh.
This illustration is an amalgamation of the ancient art form of Bengal Pattachitra and the iconic layouts from the cover designs of the Sandesh Patrika.
On this auspicious day people get decked up in their new Poila Baishakh clothes, pay their blessings to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, shopkeepers and businessmen open their new hal khata or accounts book and clear out all the pending accounts from last year. And last but not the least, devour on mouth watering Bengali delicacies from Basanti pulao to mutton and definitely hilsa.
This artwork has been heavily inspired from the magazine covers of Sandesh Patrika, which was under the editorship of Satyajit Ray along with many other prominent Bengali authors and poets. The artwork also attempts to combine the classic cover style with the traditional art style of Bengal Pattachitra. Afterall, what better way to celebrate Shubho Nababarsho and Poila Baishakh than reminiscing about the iconic Bengali figures and the traditions of Bengal.
